Summer Colour Carnival at Birla Academy: A Vibrant Celebration of Contemporary Art by Bengal Art Factory



Global Tribune Cultural Desk: Kolkata's prestigious Birla Academy of Art and Culture recently opened its doors to the much-anticipated "Summer Colour Carnival," a vibrant group exhibition organized by Bengal Art Factory under the curatorial guidance of its founder, Kinkar Bandyopadhyay. Bringing together a diverse range of artistic voices, the exhibition presents a rich tapestry of styles, perspectives, and creative expressions.


The exhibition features noteworthy works by eminent senior artist Dalim Sen, alongside compelling creations by renowned Santiniketan-based artist and academic Prof. Sushmita Guha Roy. Complementing these established names is an energetic assembly of emerging artists whose innovative approaches lend the exhibition a dynamic and contemporary character.



Among the participating artists are Poushali Mukhopadhyay, Reshmi Sharma, Ritika Purkait,  Soumita Saha, Soumen Dutta, Abhijit Das( sculpture), Mary Sufian, Sinchan Das, Trinakshi Das, Chandralekha Mukhopadhyay Das, and several others whose works have drawn considerable appreciation from visitors.

The exhibition is further enriched by the participation of Amrita Bandyopadhyay from Pondicherry, whose paintings contribute a distinctive aesthetic dimension to the showcase.

The photography section also deserves special mention. Works by Assamese photographer Anjan Deka have been particularly well received, while the photographic contributions of Rahul Sarkar have similarly garnered appreciation from viewers and fellow artists alike.


Running from 2 June to 7 June at the second-floor gallery of the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, the exhibition offers art enthusiasts an opportunity to engage with a broad spectrum of contemporary artistic practices.


A highlight of the event was the presentation of the "Shilpi Gaurav Samman" (Artist Excellence Award), conferred upon artists Soumita Saha, Ritika Purokayet, and Ranu Haldar in recognition of their dedication to artistic practice and their significant creative contributions.


The inauguration ceremony and award presentation were graced by several distinguished guests, including Dr. Supratim Das, Vice Principal of Scottish Church College; Shri Amit Samanta, Member of the Legislative Assembly, Government of West Bengal; Prof. Dr. Nandini Sahu, Vice-Chancellor and noted academic; Dr. Jayanta Sengupta, former Secretary and Director of the Victoria Memorial; and Smt.Uma Roy, Curator of the Birla Academy of Art and Culture. Their presence added considerable prestige to the occasion and underscored the cultural significance of the exhibition.



Featuring the works of 36 participating artists, the exhibition witnessed an encouraging turnout on its opening day, reflecting strong public interest and enthusiasm. Expressing his satisfaction with the response, curator Kinkar Bandyopadhyay spoke about the journey of Bengal Art Factory, its commitment to nurturing artistic talent, and its vision for future cultural initiatives. Following a series of insightful addresses by the distinguished guests, his remarks offered a thoughtful reflection on the organization's evolving role within Bengal's contemporary art landscape.


More than merely an exhibition, Summer Colour Carnival stands as a celebration of artistic diversity, creative dialogue, and the enduring power of visual expression, bringing together artists and audiences in a shared appreciation of contemporary art.
